Optimism Can #MakeItHappen

Maybelline NYFW 2015 Philippines Mini Runway

Truth be told I tend to be the realist in any group, which, more often than not, strikes other people as a negative trait. I can ruin brainstorming sessions by pointing out the possibilities. If ever there was an issue at work, I'd be the first person to notice the possible repercussions (based on experience) and colleagues get tired of hearing about them at work. I've never been the extremely optimistic type, and I tend to see what can go wrong precisely so I can prepare for when it does happen. And thankfully, Maybelline cosmetics helps me feel optimistic that things won't go wrong! Maybelline NYFW 2015 Philippines Mini Runway I could go on about how pessimism can help people, but it wouldn't be right. Pessimism causes more harm than good, which means being optimistic should be everyone's default mood. Although it was much, much later in life (more like last year) that I learned optimism was a lot better than pessimism, I'm happy that I still made the realization. Here are a few reasons why:

Optimism brightens everyone's day!

If pessimism can bring people down, optimism cheers people up. Optimism boosts energy levels, making people believe in themselves more. Plus the cheeriness affects other people too. Since emotions like sadness and happiness can be contagious, it's always better to be happy and surround yourself with happiness. Hey, without Maybelline, how will we get our hands on these latest makeup trends?

Optimism aids in self-confidence.

Pessimism just gets in the way of achievement, period. There have been plenty of times in the past that I held myself back because of fear of failure and I just ended up doing what I've been trying to avoid doing. It's not a good thing. So to truly achieve your dreams, raise your confidence level. Be optimistic! Maybelline even lets us know that we too can get Georgina Wilson's look despite our genetic differences.

Optimism is hope--that light at the end of the dark tunnel.

Optimism just helps you keep going. It prevents you from giving up and letting go of your dreams. With me, for instance, even though I hardly think of myself as an OOTD girl, I still dared to do it, since I also deserve showing off how clothes fit on me. Get a load of this!

Maybelline as my source of Optimism

Look: Things can get worse when you have a negative outlook in life. It just permeates through your very being. I have to admit, I'm still having a hard time getting rid of the negative vibes more often than I would like. It's as difficult as reformatting your brain's hard drive. The great thing about positivity, though, is that it can get easier to achieve through time. Just surround yourself with things that make you happy--positive people, beautiful things, good food. Case in point: Maybelline makes me feel good since its cosmetics make me look good. (That said, I think Maybelline should give me a chance to hang out with Georgina next year and live the #MaybellineNYFW dream since this is the best opportunity for me to feel much more optimistic about life!) This reminds me of the Maybelline New York Fashion Week sale which will run from November 13 to December 15. (Shameless plug, I know!) :D

[caption id="attachment_7485" align="alignleft" width="266"]Normie Hernandez Normie Hernandez, Philippine Transmarine Family and Crew Relations Manager, at the first Power Wives event[/caption] GlaxoSmithKline’s cervical cancer awareness efforts continues, and this time through the Power Over Cervical Cancer campaign. This campaign aims to empower Filipina women, letting them understand what they can do to reduce the risk, and prevent, cervical cancer. The Power Wives For GSK’s 2015 cervical cancer awareness campaign, Power Over Cervical Cancer, seafarers’wives have been invited to join the pioneering Power Wives, who will attend a program that includes personality development, financial management and self-care sessions. All these sessions are meant to teach them how to manage the huge risk Filipino seafarers face when they are deployed. No doubt our OFW remittances comprise a majority of the Philippines’ annual revenue, and even though seafarers make up of only 5% of the total OFWs abroad, their contributions amount to US$5.6bn. Unfortunately, seafarers’ working conditions render these Filipinos and their families at greater risk for several diseases and infections. GSK wishes to teach them the value of preventive healthcare as they strive to provide their families a better future. Since an entire nation largely depends on OFWs, it is only fitting that we ensure their families’ financial, physical and emotional well-being. This of course, includes cervical cancer awareness. Importance of early protection Cervical cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among Filipinas, with seven dying of the dreaded disease every single day. A silent but deadly disease, cervical cancer shows no signs or symptoms in its early stage, leading to 2 out of 3 Filipinas dying within five years. [caption id="" align="alignleft" width="232"]Mica Tuano Makeup Artist Mica Tuaño at the first Power Wives event[/caption] Filipinas need not be part of this statistic by avoiding the human papillomavirus, the leading cause of cervical cancer. In studies, it has been found that 99.7 percent of cervical cancer patients are positive for HPV infection. While HPV is primarily transmitted via sexual intercourse, skin-to-skin genital contact is also a recognized mode of transmission. It is estimated that up to 80 percent of women will be infected with HPV at some point in their lives. To know more about cervical cancer, visit the Pangarap Mo, Protektado page on Youtube.

Kango Express Forwarding Service Review

Aeropostale Amazon Purchases

Right after the Kango Express launch in October, I got so excited to give the company a try I ended up buying a handful of items for myself and my family. What an early holiday treat! My experience in the past with US-based personal shoppers had been like this: All US prices and shipping rates are converted to Philippine peso at a different rate to compensate for shipping and handling, excluding local rates for local shipment. Usually these shoppers charge Php50-70 per US dollar depending on item size and weight. Items arrive on my doorstep in 3-6 weeks. A cheaper alternative had been to just send my online purchases to my relatives in the US, but they seldom ship items to the Philippines or come here on vacation. (And I don't have the guts to pester them about my personal stuff, even though they ARE my relatives.) With Kango Express now available in the Philippines, I won't have to worry about the lengthy shipment times and personal shopper rates! Aeropostale Amazon Purchases I went crazy and purchased a bunch of items on Amazon and Aeropostale. Since Kango Express offered consolidation service for shipments I figured I could order multiple items from different shops online! And boy, was I excited to get my hands on new bedding (Aeropostale Hibiscus in a Bag Set), tooth remineralizing gel (3M ESPE OMNI Gel), hair protectant (Half Time Blow Dry Miracle), vitamins (Doctor's Best Vitamin D3 180 soft gels and Doctor's Best CoQ10 120 soft gels), clarifying shampoo (ICE Spiker Eraser Wipe Out Shampoo) and a new set of underwear (Fruit of the Loom Women's Microfiber 5-pack). Here's a breakdown of my purchases along with local prices of their counterparts:
  • Aeropostale Hibiscus in a Bag Set - $23.99 (~ Php3,000 for a 6-piece bedding set)
  • 3M ESPE OMNI Gel - $8.13 (~ Php 700 for single flouride application at the dentist)
  • Half Time Blow Dry Miracle - $12 (Php 1,200 for its equivalent)
  • Doctor's Best Vitamin D3 180 soft gels - $3.29 (Php 6.50 per 800IU soft gel)
  • Doctor's Best CoQ10 120 soft gels - $13.99 (Php 720 for a different brand available online)
  • ICE Spiker Eraser Wipe Out Shampoo - $5.50 (~Php 300 for organic clarifying shampoo)
  • Fruit of the Loom Women's 5-pack - $10.49 (~ Php 600 for 3-pack mid-range microfiber undies)
Items were sent from three different locations, so all in all my October 30 shopping splurge cost me $93.40 (including taxes and shipping). ???????????????????????????????

Pictured: Bottles of vitamins for healthy heart and bones, a tube of fluoride gel and a bottle of blow-dry spray that cuts blow dry time in half!

The three different packages arrived at the Kango Express US warehouse on different dates in November after the purchase. I'm happy to note that the Amazon seller who sold the ICE Spiker Eraser sent out the shampoo almost immediately. Although the first package arrived at the warehouse on November 4, the last one reached the warehouse on the evening of November 6 due to some delay. Since Kango Express only ships out consolidated items to the Philippines on Friday mornings, and I wanted to receive all my items at once, I had to schedule the shipment for the following week (November 13). I thought APEC week (November 16-20) would affect shipment of my items, but lo and behold--

Track Shipment Kango Express

My package arrived in the middle of APEC week without a problem!

Kango Express Package Details

For this shipment originally the three packages were going to be shipped individually and the shipping fee would be around $101 and some change. MyLinda of KangoExpress was gracious enough to accommodate my request to combine all my packages in one box, which she even reduced size from 21 x 18 x 14 inches to 21 x 18 x 10. She also advised me to use the 20% discount code for first time users to help me save on costs. Shipping fee was reduced to just $77.23, and I have a few items on their way to the warehouse again!

VERDICT

Granted I can purchase most of the items I bought online right here in the PH. With shipping and taxes included, my online purchases total Php8016.62, while the equivalent items here in the Philippines can cost me almost the same. Online shopping and shipping affords me more time to do other stuff, though, since I won't have to walk around the mall or contact local sellers and deposit payments at different banks anymore. PROS 5-day shipping transit time Free hold service Top notch customer service Immediate email notification regarding packages Free package resizing available Reliable shipment tracking CONS Consolidated packages leave the warehouse on Fridays only. Kango Express is highly recommended!

Victor Frankenstein Movie Review

radcliffe as igor in VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN

Paul McGuigan’s take on Mary Shelley’s classic doesn't make much sense. The director behind "Wicker Park" has turned a classic tale into a monstrous, somewhat confusing film through the help of screenwriter Max Landis ("Blues Brothers 2000", "Chronicles"). In the movie Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) is a circus freak turned lab partner who got Victor Frankenstein's eye after saving a circus performer from certain death. Seen as a gifted physician, Radcliffe eventually lives with James McAvoy's Victor Frankenstein and assumes the identity of Frankenstein's flatmate, Igor Strausman.

radcliffe as igor in VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN

It's interesting to note that, although Igor was not a character in Mary Shelley’s book, Max Landis had chosen to tell the Frankenstein story through Igor's eyes. That decision could have cost the movie a lot since it made Victor Frankenstein a secondary character rather than the primary one.

james mcavoy VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN

Unfortunately Radcliffe's committed portrayal of the hunchback, and even McAvoy's madman moments could not have saved this film from certain death in the big screen. One fascinating thing that may have derailed the movie from its chosen Victorian-era scary course is the introduction of a love interest. Igor's interest in a brunette circus performer seemed insincere compared with the chemistry between Igor and Victor Frankenstein himself. And the introduction of a rich benefactor in the form of an androgynous-looking, blonde medical student didn't help the movie from seeming homoerotic. It's comical, and keeps moviegoers' attention from the dark message of the film.

For an interesting take on Mary Shelley's “Victor Frankenstein”, catch the film today, November 25, in cinemas nationwide.

Jordan’s Premiere Beauty Secrets Mud Mask Review

Jordan's Beauty Secrets Facial Mud Mask

Unlike other bodies of water, the Dead Sea is unique in that it has greater salt content compared to regular ocean water. The greater density allows people to float on the Dead Sea. But the difference between the Dead Sea and the other oceans doesn't end there. While ocean water contains mostly sodium chloride, the Dead Sea is rich in Zinc (contributes to skin renewal) , Bromine (relieves skin stress), Magnesium (rapidly heals and soothes the skin to prevent redness, itching and irritations), Calcium (protects skin from dryness) and Potassium (balances moisture levels). The rich combination of minerals in the Dead Sea has been effective in relieving skin conditions such as psoriasis, acne and even skin ageing.

Dead Sea mud has been so popular it's being used for facial and body treatments in the Middle East, Europe, Russia, Africa, Ukraine, USA, Canada and Asia! Thankfully, one of the biggest distributors of Dead Sea mud is bringing its renowned therapeutic products to the Philippines! Watch out for it in December this year.

Jordan's Beauty Secrets Facial Mud Mask

Curious to sample a quick pampering session, I opened my pack of mud mask in Milk & Honey. Slathered just enough amount to cover my face, and as instructed on the back of the pack, I waited for 10-15 minutes before removing the mud mask.

Jordans Beauty Secrets Milk & Honey Mask Trial Before During

Before and with mask

Quick thoughts for this review: I have sensitive skin that reddens and flakes fairly easily. The mud mask stung within a few seconds of application, and continued to do so until about a minute later.

After using Beauty Secrets mud product

After using Jordan's Premiere Beauty Secrets mud mask in Milk & Honey

I persisted and chose to leave the mask on for about 15 minuted before removing it with regular tap water. It was probably the Manila heat that caused the mud mask to dry up fairly quickly, but it wasn't easy completely removing the product. I was eager to see the effects of the mud mask after irritating my skin for a bit. Amazingly, the mus mask did not cause any blisters or anything! It made my skin feel smooth and refreshed!

PROS

Easy to apply Makes my skin smooth and supple No annoying scent

CONS

Slightly gritty feel; mud mask not as fine, smooth and creamy as I would have hoped

That's it for the quick review for now. Want to try it for yourself? Catch Beauty Secrets' mud products in major malls! For more information about the products, visit http://www.b-secrets.com or https://www.facebook.com/jordansbeautysecrets.

Myra Vitawhite and Vitasmooth Facial Wash with Aquazorb towel

After a quick review on one of the latest skincare products in the market, here's a post about the Myra Facial Wash product line! Now with these Vitamin E infused facial wash products out, we can sleep better at night knowing that we can make our bodies look younger and brighter inside and out. Aside from simply taking Myra-E Vitamin E supplements religiously, we can also use either the Myra VitaSmooth and VitaWhite Facial Wash on a regular basis. Currently, Myra is the only facial wash brand in the local market with vitamin E, helping keep skin healthy, nourished and clean. The Myra VitaSmooth Facial Wash (50mL for SRP Php70.00) is a moisturizing facial wash containing French spring water and aloe vera extract to improve skin elasticity and maintain smooth and young-looking texture. Meanwhile, the Myra VitaWhite Facial Wash (50mL for SRP Php75.00) is designed to whiten skin since it contains plant extracts that whiten skin and niacinamide that evens out skin tone. Hypoallergenic and dermatologist-tested, both facial wash variants are safe for everyday use.

Myra Vitawhite and Vitasmooth Facial Wash with Aquazorb towel

Myra VitaWhite Facial Wash with BioWhite Complex on the left, Myra VitaSmooth Facial Wash with Moisture Plus on the right.

QUICK TEST

Since vitamin E and fish oil are essential to my "healthy living" phase this year, I was eager to try Myra's new skincare products. With my sensitive skin, finding the right product that doesn't irritate my skin can be tedious! So let's see if this brand can help clean my face without causing any irritation.

Myra Vitasmooth Facial Wash - Moisture Rich

Only a small amount can go a long way. I like the slightly runny consistency.

Before using Myra Vitasmooth Facial Wash

 I woke up like this.

After using Myra Vitasmooth Facial Wash

After using Myra VitaSmooth

VERDICT

I am happy to report that after a quick trial, the Myra VitaSmooth facial wash did not cause a)redness, b)itchiness and c)breakouts. No stinging sensation while I had the facial wash on my face either! It cleaned my face just like regular facial wash. I feel that since vitamin E promotes smooth, hydrated skin, I highly recommend the Myra Facial Wash (both the VitaSmooth and VitaWhite varieties) for those with dry and sensitive skin that tend to break out easily.

Natural Ways to Prevent Colds and Flu

Bacteria image from free digital photos

[caption id="attachment_7688" align="alignleft" width="320"]Bacteria image from free digital photos Germs image from FreeDigitalPhotos.net.[/caption] Whether you run a busy company or a large family, you can't afford the cold or flu which could slow you down for weeks. Getting a flu shot can certainly help, but there are easy, natural ways to prevent colds and flu. Wash Your Hands Colds and flu are viruses that are easily spread by contact. Just being out in public puts you in a compromised situation where it's impossible to avoid sick people. Any person with a cold or flu who sneezes into their hands then touches an object puts you at risk. If you touch that object, even hours later, you can pick up the germs. To stay healthy, wash your hands often. If you can't access a sink with soap and water, use a hand sanitizer that contains alcohol. Don't Touch Your Face You can't avoid touches things when you're out in public places, at work or at home, but you can avoid touching your face. Cold and flu viruses enter your body through your eyes, nose and mouth, so keeping your hands off your face offers prevention. If you have kids, teach them to avoid touching their face as much as possible, especially at school where germs can spread quickly. Don't Sneeze or Cough Into Your Hands Although your mom taught you to cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze or cough, it's better to use a tissue. Viruses cling to your bare hands, so sneezing and coughing into them can easily spread germs. If you need to sneeze or cough, use a tissue then throw it away. If you don't have any tissues with you, sneeze or cough into the inside of your elbow, an area that's not likely to come in contact with people or objects around you. Avoid Cigarettes and Alcohol Cigarettes and alcohol negatively affects your immune system, your body's natural defense against germs. Smokers get more colds that non-smokers because smoke dries out the nose passages and cilia, the tiny hairs that line the nose and lungs and work to filter out germs. Health studies show that one cigarette can prevent cilia from working up to 40 minutes. Alcohol curbs your immune system and dehydrates your body which can make you twice as likely to pick up germs and infections. Mass Media Awareness Movement 2016

The College of Mass Communication Student Council (CMCSC) this February will hold a month-long campaign to raise awareness on recent media issues in an attempt to link the industry with the academe.

Under the Mass Media Awareness Movement, the month will be stocked with events under the theme, “Retrospective x Prospective,” a way of looking back to the past in order to move forward.

Launching February 2, a series of events will be held that will suggest new and revolutionary ways to bring the media to the students, and vice versa.

Separated into four parts, each week will attempt to view the media in different perspectives, ranging from the students to the whole landscape of media.

Week one features “Ansaveh?” a talkshow to raise the discourse on the topic of popular culture. The experimental program will directly involve media personalities discussing the way they conduct themselves and the content they create in the process.

Following that week, a communication bootcamp will be held. The week-long event aims to introduce different and unorthodox ways of teaching the practice of media and communication to student.

The third week will shift the focus to the media industry, in which recent issues will be brought to light in media situationers that will bring the discussion of recent phenomena to the academe and the students.

To cap it off, a Media Students Summit will be held, congregating neophyte media practitioners and communication students to finally shift the lens to the retrospective—viewing the present with knowledge of the past. The summit will encourage concrete action, urging the participants to think critically about the past and future.

The grand summit is slated to run on February 27, and will gather at least 450 students and newbie media practitioners across the nation.
